“Two Critical Needs: One Sensible Solution”

Anchoring Points:

 

  1. Direct Care Workers care for people in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice, small group homes, and for individuals in their homes.  They provide 80% of the paid hands-on care to elders, disabled and chronically ill individuals today, and these roles are the 2nd and 4th fastest growing job category nationally.

 

  1. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, of people 65 or older 70% will need some type of long term care and support, and 40% will spend an extended amount of time in a nursing care facility.

 

  1. We need to develop and recruit 1,000,000 direct care workers between now and the year 2016 – a number that easily outstrips the number of educators and teachers required for our youth.

 

  1. Direct Care Workers do not have sufficient training to provide the desired quality care and support with skill and competence, and this issue will impact each of us in a very personal way either in our businesses, family or the care we may one day need for ourselves.

 

  1. The CareGiver Training Institute is a non-profit that offers nurse-based training and life skills to students truly interested in joining the direct care field and coming from economically vulnerable situations:

·        Single mothers struggling to care for children via minimum wage jobs,

·        Older workers re-entering the workforce after a long absence,

·        Young people dreaming of working in healthcare but have inadequate educational opportunities.

 

  1. Our certification program serves Tucson and southeastern Arizona, and is either completed in seven weeks, Monday through Friday or in the evening for 12 weeks and alternating Saturdays. 

 

  1. We will have 13 classes in 2009, and our faculty of 45 part time nurses has graduated from 50 people in 2002, to over 200 in 2007 – over 600 total graduates in five years.  Financial aid and scholarships are available, and all participants receive practical experience in the workplace.  Several graduates have matriculated into nursing programs.

 

My commitment to this field started when as an adopted child I pledged to care for my ailing mother following the imminent death of my father.  I found a profound calling to a life committed to helping the elderly and those in need of help to live their final days with dignity, peace and joy.
