Flying Lesson #5:  Communicate with the Controllers: When taking private pilot flying lessons Pam learned the importance of communicating with the controllers in the tower at larger airports, a dynamic interchange that was daunting at first compared to flying into small airfields.  Her instructor advised to remember to tune into the right frequency, comply when it is called for, remember the controller is a person and may be wrong, and overall you need to find your own voice, being equal with those with authority.  Learning to discern the truth from both outer and inner “controllers” is part of the journey of personal change.

Flying Lesson #6: Broaden Your Scan:  In spite of an ancient response to fear – narrowing our vision – we can learn to develop an ability to broaden our scan to take in information from different levels, using diverse methods so that we can diagnose problems and develop balanced solutions that fit the larger reality.  Broadening our scan is the opposite of freezing in our tracks, and training allows us to try a solution and then keep expanding until one fits, often stepping beyond a rational (or hyper rational!) path to lean into our intuition, imagination and instinct.  We know more than we think we know.

Give Way to the Winds:  As pilots of life, we must always remember that we are subject to great forces we do not understand or control, and that humility and surrender can be our greatest tools for safety.  Remember to remember to recognize that while the ego and mind may be able to see the visible, it cannot see the huge, often real components hidden like the treacherous parts of an iceberg.  Giving way to the winds allows us to be carried by a bigger spirit, where even a stall will be corrected automatically if we let go and let the plane fly by itself.  Our souls remember how to fly.
