Circles of Change:  Conversations with Dr. Zara Larsen

on Change Leadership and Career Fulfillment

February 1, 2009

“Opening Up: Transitions in Love and Life”

Guest:  Victor Gagliardi

www.gagliardiphoto.com and www.uncommoongoods.com

Anchoring Points:

  1. Over 20 years I left the high-paced music industry to pursue my passion, building a business around what I love to do – taking photographs of things I love.

  1. My second major work, Opening Up: The Search for Intimate Love is a   five year journey of self-revelation through writing, surfacing favorite and new quotations, photography and revisiting love and the loves in my life.

  1. I took on this project with considerable trepidation, hoping to pay tribute to and make full sense of the ten years I cared for my elderly mother who passed away last year.  I knew I was going at risk, but had to go there.

  1. Despite the incredible success of my first book, A Turning Point: Images to Words (Reference:  “Circles of Change” July 20, 2008, A Turning Point), I was unsure the second book would ever really happen.  I continue to this day to struggle with the fear of rejection.

  1. Released in late December, to the surprise of many this piece is not a Turning Point II.  The reader will become far more involved, and some have said it is too intimate and too revealing.

  1. On the front cover is a photo of a backlit decorative heart in the window of a rustic front door, a photograph I had taken spontaneously when traveling there years ago in Maine. As with A Turning Point, the coincidences and connections are beginning to unfold, as out of the blue I recently received a call from a gift shop owner in the town requesting copies of Opening Up after he saw the photograph and connected it to the door.

  1. I am honored to be in partnership now with Uncommon Goods, an organization affiliated with the Dr. Andrew Lowen Foundation.  Dr. Lowen was a truly gifted visionary, schooled in the arts and sciences, and known for his teachings and beliefs on Bioenergetics, a mind-body therapy.         Dr. Lowen and my mother passed away within hours of each other on October 28, 2008.

  1. As a future project, I am considering a small book to help others deal with loss and grief; but, in the meantime, I continue to revel in the changes brought into my life through photography, writing, the book publishing experience and the relationships around the world I continue to build along the way.
